Despite working two
or even three jobs to try to make ends meet, many single mothers fall short!
Often the basic necessities are out of reach. Yet, their limited
incomes place them above the threshold for many forms of federal
assistance. They do without many of the things we take for
granted – access to health care; a safe place for their children
during the day; savings accounts to cushion financial setbacks;
or strong, sound examples of positive parenting.
For the
women served by the YWCA, living above poverty is just the
beginning of their journey. These women look forward to a day
when they are the ones who are helping others and giving back to
the communities that supported their journey from poverty to
self-sufficiency. We can all unite behind this kind of vital and
dramatic progress.
