Today’s YWCA helps women, and
primarily, single mothers, climb out of poverty. In Dallas County, more
than 120,000 households are headed by single women. These
families are the face of the “Unheard Third” – the 35 percent of
American families struggling to afford the basics. Many of these
families live just above poverty line, often making them ineligible for
public benefits but still in need of assistance.
In 2006-07, the YWCA served more than 6,600 clients through core
programs and outreach. The average
household income of the YWCA's families is less than $30,000. More
importantly, single mothers headed 85 percent of households served, and
minorities represent 80 percent of all YWCA clients.
