YW Women's Health has promoted the early detection of breast cancer for medically underserved women for 20 years. It is the only comprehensive women's breast health program that teaches women to advocate for their own health, while providing access and support to obtain mammogram screenings, diagnosis and treatment. YW's approach combines a continuum of community-based services to improve early breast cancer detection and increase treatment options.
One in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer at some time in her life. In fact, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in the State of Texas. The uninsured and the poor are more likely to die from health-related problems. In Dallas County, more than 400,000 women are uninsured and make up 50 percent of those living in poverty. Surviving breast cancer depends on early diagnosis.
